I’m here to tell you: that’s not how you create a true life change. That’s not how you create the future you of your dreams. The one with your fittest self at the forefront – and I don’t just mean physically.

There’s a real problem in the health & fitness industry today, and that’s the idea that physical health trumps the rest of it. The mental and emotional toll that hyper-focusing on fitness can take.

The burnout that happens when you push too hard or don’t treat yourself with love, grace, and compassion.

A quick note: I don’t want you to confuse “compassion” with “easy” or “letting yourself and others off the hook.”

You can kick your own ass while having compassion. I can kick your ass with compassion.

We CAN get results and still be emotionally mature and self-aware.

Compassion just means reframing why you’re doing things. You’re doing these things because you love and respect yourself… NOT because you hate yourself.

Compassion means pushing or being pushed with generosity and respect.

Compassion is about the motivation behind why you’re here.

Having compassion is about treating yourself like someone you love, a child or an elderly parent. Compassion means learning to give yourself what you NEED vs what you WANT because you actually care about yourself and the person you are becoming. You might want to skip a workout, but you probably NEED to go for a walk, drink some water and/or go to bed.

The worse your mood, the more important the workout!

A lot of fitness experts seem to forget that not everyone has years of experience cementing healthier habits or a body that’s used to moving. Not everyone has spent the last however many years falling in love with being healthier (and everything that comes with it.)

And those experts don’t tailor their programs to meet YOUR needs – to meet you where you are right now.

And what’s more – they don’t allow your needs to shape the programs they offer. Instead, they create programs THEY would love – forgetting that you’re simply not them.

That’s why I decided to do something different. I decided to blend the “ass-kicking” motivation with the compassion and grace that I know you need… because contrary to what many experts will have you believe… you can do both.

I work to put the “personal” in “personal training.”

I work with YOU to create a program for YOU!

And what’s more – we can do it together.

How do I know?
Because I’ve done it

I spent the first half of my life hating my body. I didn’t move, I wasn’t fit, and I overate constantly (mostly to try to cope with hating my body.)

I had to become my own health hero – and that meant I had to learn how to do it.

I didn’t start my journey knowing what to do. And I certainly didn’t start on my journey alone! My mom encouraged me to try getting on a treadmill for 10 minutes a day.

That’s it. 10 minutes a day on a treadmill.
(Can you say COMPASSION?!)

She knew that AT THAT MOMENT any more than 10 minutes would feel overwhelming and undoable. She knew that encouraging me to lift weights, train for a marathon, take a spin class… Would be too far outside my comfort zone IN THAT MOMENT and I’d never get started. I couldn’t run a marathon, spin or lift weights YET.

YET being the key word.

My mom had to meet me where I was so I could grow into the Kathleen of today. Today I have run over 10 marathons, taught many a spin class, done 8 half Ironmans and one full Ironman and TEACH others to lift weights. Talk about a transformation…..but it didn’t happen overnight.

It happened LITTLE WIN BY LITTLE WIN,
step by step.

My mom knew that you don’t have to be great to get started… but you do have to get started to be great.

Instead of trying to make me do workouts that I would never do and would probably injure me, she had me start with a simple 10 minutes a day on a treadmill.

But something important: she had me go to the Y to do this walking. Why? 

Because most of the people there were over 40 and under 10 – which meant I wasn’t around my peers when I was walking. I didn’t need to feel awkward in this environment… and that’s part of figuring out what worked for me.

Removing the hurdle of awkwardness is part of what allowed me to stick with it. That’s what I needed at that moment. That’s what helped me create that little win at first – to take that first step.

My health journey evolved from there.

With my mom’s support and encouragement, that 10-minutes a day turned into much more.  

I figured out how to lift weights. I tried running. I took a few exercise classes. I learned more about eating the right foods to fuel my body – and it all snowballed into my 20+ year career as a personal trainer and fitness expert.

I discovered the joy in exercise – the kind of exercise that I could stick with – and I’ve since made it my mission to help YOU do the same thing.  

Plus, I have created my recipe for nutrition success, a “recipe” that is sustainable yet healthy. It is my mission to help YOU create your nutrition mix.

But I’m going to help you create your OWN path, instead of giving you what you “should” do and allowing you to feel guilty or less-than if you don’t make it happen.

Each week, there will be a group coaching session that’s tailored to you and your other group members’ needs. (Remember, we’re meeting you where you ARE instead of a predetermined path that might not work for you!)

We will cover things like:

  • The fickle nature of motivation and willpower and how you can create a non-negotiable instead…
  • Understanding the difference between goals and wishes… and tailoring your goals to your own fitness personality and life reality…
  • Using the “science of neurobiology and behavioural change” to help you not only set the right goals… but continually move toward them in a way that works for you…
  • The Systems for Success and how you can set yourself up to achieve instead of to fail…
  • Finding solutions and leaning in for growth – as well as other essential mindset strategies that will empower you to continue in your health journey…

Each week I send a “pre course” email that outlines the topics we will be covering. This pre-course email includes topic overview, sometimes a mini quiz to gauge your knowledge on the topic, and links to resources that you can read/listen/watch if you love getting into the weeds of the material.

After the course I send a follow-up email with material on anything that came up organically in the lecture and anything you need for homework between weeks.

Since you will know about our specific topic in advance of each week you can send in or prepare questions that I will try to answer during the training. If I can’t cover the question in class we will email privately back and forth.  

If you don’t want to chat in class, no problem, let me know and we will make sure to work together over email to set your intentions and goals for the week. Get excited to establish your “systems” each week that will ensure you hit your goals.

In between calls, you will have open email communication with me – I’ll hold you accountable and keep you on track, answer questions that might be holding you back from success this week, and help you get clarity on what you need to keep pushing forward on your fitness journey.

You can do as much or as little work as you want/have time for. If you just want to come and listen to the lecture, great. If you want to have your camera off, great. If you want to read a few links but not others, great. Make the course the experience that you need!

Not Just An Exercise Program

This online fitness course is about more than introducing and increasing movement in your life.

This course helps you transform your MINDSET. Why is that CRITICAL? Without a growth oriented, productive mindset you have nothing.

Simply put: Your thoughts inform your behaviors.

Your behaviors/actions inform your results.

To be successful you need to create a  “find solutions, growth oriented” mindset. To be successful you need a productive inner dialogue. Your inner dialogue is a product of your mindset and your mindset is a product of your inner dialogue – they depend on one another and BOTH contribute to your success.

When you want to ditch your workout, drink or eat in a way that doesn’t serve you and/or stay up too late you need to be able to take a productive pause, to talk to yourself; walk yourself off the health ledge and convince yourself to take the action that you NEED vs the action that you desire.

Self-talk—mindset—is CRITICAL.
Without a healthy mindset we let momentary desires derail us from achieving our future goals.
